Sundance Update

Indie films are in business again with studios and independent film companies alike making acquisitions at a breakneck clip this year! Prices are up, scouting is up, attendance is sold out for films, many with a low film budget and some higher movie budgets as well, and execs are crawling the streets and parties looking for the next great talent and the upcoming breakout movie!

The stars are out in force with the streets of Park City jammed with movie studio executives, indie filmmakers, audiences eager to see new films and the locals joining into the frey.

The Sundance Film Festival is a burst of renewed energy for the indie film sector, and much needed indeed!  Congratulations to all the filmmakers and film crews who worked so hard to get their films made and noticed at the 2011 Sundance festival.

Movie Budget

This year will be the year of the first impact of the reduced movie budget paradigm into the marketplace. Following 2010's increasing reduction in the size of the movie budget, 2011 will demonstrate the new frugality with films coming to fruition based upon the mantra of a newfound creativity.

As the reduction of financial resources available to the film finance market, filmmakers have had to do with less capital for their move budget dollars. While the independent film sector has always dealt with more limited funding than their studio counterparts, the financial crisis has dealt indies an unfair hand.

Movies and all their elements, including star salaries, have taken a hit. More and more actors and actresses have turned to televison, which is arguably the new independent filmmaking scene. As cable television picks up the slack likewise film crews are finding more work in that venue.

Overall, the movie budget continues toward reduced levels. This is creating more opportunities for new filmmakers to create productions with the new technology as well. With new distribution models needed, and emerging, we will see more and more "low budget" production methods becoming mainstream; however with increasing production values to their predecessors due to the amazing increase in quality technology available at lower costs.
