The 23rd Tokyo International Film Festival
Dates: October 23rd, 2010 - October 31st, 2010
Location: Roppongi Hills (Minato City) and the greater Tokyo metro area.
Chairman: Tatsumi 'Tom' Yoda
Created in 1985 Tiff aims to be one of the four top film festivals in the world. Festival is hosted by UNIJAPAN The Japan Association for International Promotion of the Moving Image, the Ministry of the Economy, Trade and Industry, Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Agency for Cultural Affairs, with funds by the Japan Arts Fund.
Programs:
The Main Program is made up of films in competition from 81 countries with various levels of movie budgets and cinematic scope. Specialty Screenings include world cinema releases prior to their Japan distribution. Winds of Asia represents the Asian point of view. Japanese Eyes previews current local movies. World Cinema promotes North American and European films honored at the esteemed festivals of those regions and the Natural Tiff shows movies demonstrating how man and nature may co-exist in harmony.
This years films in the Competition will include:
News Update:
Opening Night Film Announced
The Social Network - directed by David Fincher will open the festival.
Drama surrounding founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg
Closing Night Film Announced
The Town - directed by Ben Affleck will close the festival.
Other films include:
And Peace on Earth
The Piano in a Factory
Sketches of Kaitan City
Zephyr
Movie presentations of World Cinema
The Ghost Writer
Winter's Bone
This year will feature fine works exposing the talents of Taiwanese filmmakers.
The Tokyo film fest showcases cinema with large film budgets from well known directors from the EU countries and the USA as well as those with a more modest movie budget from all regions of the globe.
With the trend toward reduced overseas pre-sale activity the resulting reduction in the scope and scale of the movie budget is evident in this year's crop of projects coming to the fore. While it remains to be seen if a resultant drop in quality ensues, it is noted that foreign filmmakers have had to work with much less than their US counterparts for decades.
