Meryl Streep Likes Low Film Budget Movie Shoots

In a 60 Minutes interview with Morley Safer, Meryl Streep reveals her preference in which movie productions she likes to shoot.  It seems she would rather a low film budget production to perform in.

The reasoning being that she dislikes being asked to undergo take after take of the same scene.  In a low film budget production she states, they can't afford to keep going on and on.   Whereas on the other hand a large film budget movie production does have the resources for multiple takes and continuous reworking of the scene and performance.

Another pet peeve of Ms. Streeps is the penchant for big film budget productions which cater to teenagers. As she explains it "they try to discourage you from coming if you don't buy toys and the merchandising".

An Indie Film Budget and Schedule from a Veteran Line Producer is Fundamental

Getting film financing these days is harder than ever and looks to continue to be that way for awhile. With opportunities for filmmakers decreasing and the odds getting tougher it is more critical than ever to have an indie film budget and schedule in hand.

Even more to the point it is fundamental to have your indie film budget and schedule created by an industry veteran line producer with years of experience in the field and on the set. While anyone can throw together some numbers into a film budget template or using questionable software, only a true film budgeting expert knows that their numbers are accurate.

Film financiers know this as well. That is why whom you obtain your indie film budget and schedule from is an indicator of your ability to delegate and surround yourself with professionals. These industry executives rely upon the advice of trusted line producers and production managers and they certainly can ascertain an amateur film budget mock-up from one custom created by an indie film budget and schedule expert.

One of the first criteria one should look at in someone claiming to know how to create an indie film budget and schedule is to look at their credits. A qualified indie film budget and schedule line producer should have years, if not decades of experience. Just working at a studio (perhaps not even as a film or movie producer) is no substitute for the years of film budgeting knowledge and experience that go into a quality film budget from such a professional.

Beware of imitators and people claiming to be line producers or production managers, or even a producer, they may not be that which they claim to be.

Film Tax Incentives Update | Indie Film Budget Impact

The rise and fall of the film tax incentive as a critical enhancement of film budget financial cash flow for local state film industry growth has been well documented yet remains seemingly uncontested. For the last several years the U.S. states have worked to influence indie film producers to bring their films and production dollars to their regions.

However, just as momentum was building for the growing infrastructure and development of local industry, new political winds brought in pols who were against the film business and tax incentives in general. Rather than help individual industries, the concept was to lower all taxes for business to spur growth.

The fact remains that the film tax credits were wonderfully successful. Film productions flocked to the areas with the best incentive. Film crew and film production services companies flourished. Students remained in their hometowns, schools opened film production programs and millions of dollars were spent in the local economies for hotels, restaurants, shops, hardware stores, lumber yards, car and truck rentals, etc.

The rapid destruction of the film tax incentive support system for the indie film budget of movies, especially in the credit crunch recessionary times it has occurred in was another blow to the indie film sector. When treasuries analyze the lost inward expenditure from the film industry they may change their ideas on a film tax credit for the motion picture industry and choose to keep those dollars at home as opposed to going to Canada and overseas.

Why Can't I Just Use a Sample Film Budget for Film Finance?

Written by Film Budget

This might seem like a rhetorical or silly question but it sadly is not. The top film finance advisors decry the poor quality of film budget that comes across their desk time and again, either from a mocked-up sample film budget or a form utilized from a software program without the knowledge required to produce accurate figures.

These film financing executives continuously insist that filmmakers engage a qualified line producer to create their custom film budget and schedule for their investment package. The lack of well thought out and thorough financial documentation remains an extremely costly factor in movie production in terms of delay and expense in closing investor and financing deals.

A line producer or unit production manager with years of experience brings their decision making and cost analysis process to each film they create the budget and schedule for. Utilizing this highly regarded skill set is fundamental to good filmmaking practices.

Indie Film Budget and Schedule | Line Producer | Film Production Services

Written by film producer Jack Binder (Columbia Pictures 'Reign Over Me', New Line Cinema's 'The Upside of Anger')

I created Filmbudget.com in 1997 after 12 years of being a producer of film and television and providing film production services. Following being a producer of live productions, working for HBO as a Production Coordinator on 'Comic Relief' and as the vice president of creative affairs for Michael Phillips Productions ('The Sting', 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind') I went on to produce indie film and studio movies for Columbia Tri-Star, The Walt Disney Company, Lionsgate Films, New Line Cinema and many other production companies and studios.

The idea behind the film budget company was to provide line producer film production services for fellow filmmakers interested in moving their screenplays forward into production. Knowing that film finance requires a quality indie film budget and schedule in order to determine the accuracy and veracity of the film producers finance and business plan, it was a logical step to provide this documentation for filmmakers.

This tradition carries forward today utilizing twenty-five years of film production experience. From whom you obtain your film budget reflects upon yourself and your company. I welcome further inquire at http://filmbudget.com/contact.shtml

Line Producer Production Services

A quality film budget custom crafted by an experienced line producer is critical to the filmmaking process.  In order to obtain film financing and attract movie investors a filmmaker must consider the viability of the source of their film budget documentation.

While templates and cheap software solutions may seem attractive in cost at the outset, they lack the years of experience and attention to detail that creates accuracy and reliability that is required when determining how much money one needs to borrow or obtain from an investor.

Bank lenders, film finance institutions, executives and distributors all are aware of the importance of a viable film budget and schedule and consistently advise film producers, directors and actors involved in the film production side to obtain the production services of a line producer with many, many years of services to the film industry.

Co-Productions Set to Take Greater Role

Co-productions are set to take a greater role in film finance and production as the film budget enhancement of film tax incentives continues to evaporate. Due to the attack on the film industry from local governments whom have shut down life supporting tax credits for the film business in support of production film budget costs targeting local economies and industries.

Overseas, countries have for a long time determined the value of film tax incentives and credits to enhance the film budget of local artists and art house films. With the decreased film funding from state coffers supporting film crews and vendors in the U.S., such overseas collaborations will increasingly fund the film budget of those movies willing to undertake the extensive cooperation required.

The New Film Tax Incentives Status Update

Unless ones had their head in the sand the last several months it should be quite obvious that the film tax incentives landscape has changed drastically. The soft film finance money aiding a film budget for independents and studios alike has been steadily evaporating.

Newly elected officials in the legislatures and the Governor's office have taken the reigns to draw in expenditures and balance budgets. The wisdom of doing so in massively scaling back the incentive for inward film production spend dollars remains to be seen, however it is clearly already putting thousands of film production crew out of work across the country.

The direct result is reduced film funding for indie films and an even greater importance for a lean and accurate film budget and schedule to present to investors. Greater attention to detail and utilization of the latest economizing production techniques is certainly needed.

Film Tax Incentives Suffer Massive Reductions

The film tax incentive market supporting the domestic film budget of feature film and television production across the United States continues to undergo a massive assault of new political realities. The new austerity facing local governments combined with long festering modalities and economic theories have lead to the biggest rollback and shear elimination of state incentivized filmmaking in historical terms.

The states enacted film tax credits to counterbalance runaway production film budget expenses to other countries, mostly Canada and Eastern Europe. At a time when the cost of making a movie in the US was steadily increasing, and likewise the film budget of those productions, the film tax credit helped keep production dollars at home and brought that spend to the state and local level.

As these subsidies dry up a major element of film finance is disappearing and the trend will be to offshore film production once again. California understands this, as do several states, including Louisiana and they will be the victors in attracting inward spending of the production film budget dollars of movie and television productions.

DVD / Home Video Downturn Forces Layoffs at Studios

The downturn in the dvd and home video entertainment market has been widely reported for some time as it affects every aspect of a film budget and profitability for the distributors. The major Hollywood studios have stated significant reductions in revenues due to the decline.

While new media outlets, including VOD, Netflix, Hulu and Amazon have taken up the demand for home entertainment, the income generated is not nearly close to making up for the loss to the industry's bottom line.

The Walt Disney Studios announced last week it would layoff 200 or 5% of its workforce, mostly in distribution but some in home video as well. Fox Home Entertainment has fared better as a distributor of other production and distribution companies home entertainment in addition to their own, however the have announced today a layoff coming of about 22 employees.

Likewise Lionsgate Films recently announced a round of workforce reductions. All of these actions are claimed to be a result of the decrease in rental and sell through revenue to their coffers.

The continued turmoil in the industry, combined with difficult to find film finance and the current pull back in state sponsored film tax incentives must impact the film budget of every production. Now more than ever before it is critical that a production film budget and schedule be as accurate and proven as possible, and created by a professional line producer with extensive experience and track record.

A Film Budget By a Veteran Line Producer is Critical for Film Finance

A film budget by a veteran line producer is critical for film finance, according to experts in the field.  One of the biggest mistakes lenders comment upon is the inadequacy of a film budget submitted by a producer seeking funding.

Film financiers and lenders in the entertainment business are well studied in the process of film budgeting and scheduling and can determine a sub-standard film budget from one properly custom created by a seasoned film producer with extensive experience in filmmaking.

The common complaint is that such a lack of understanding of the importance of a quality film budget and schedule from an established line producer demonstrates not only a lack of respect for the investors' or lenders' financial contributions and its safety, but also the inability of the producer to delegate where necessary.

Film Budget Inc. founder Producer Jack Binder created Filmbudget.com to provide filmmakers with a top quality and professional film budget and schedule, screenplay breakdown and film consulting services.

Binder has produced film for the major Hollywood studios, independent production companies and his own indie film companies.   His feature film and television producer credits can be found here.

10 Tips for Earthday and Improving Your Green Factor

Earthday is Friday April 22, 2011

Ten tips for improving your green factor:

1. Use a Reusable Bag - take a bag with you to the store. Either a paper bag or a plastic bag in your pocket is easy to do and once you get in the habit it is a no brainer.

2. Install a Filter Tap - Don't use bottled water. A filter tap under your sink will filter out the bad chemicals in city tap water. Aquasana makes a great one. Plastic water bottles should be avoided. Use a glass or metal for a portable source from your filter tap.

3. Take shorter showers. Reducing your shower time can drastically save water and energy. Each minute of shower time is roughly five gallons of water.

4. Don't run the water while you brush your teeth.

5. Use the warm or cold setting on your washing machine.

6. Walk or ride your bike (or skateboard) wherever and whenever you can. Avoid driving trips for one item. Organize your travels to maximize driving errands.

7. Switch to energy saving fluorescent light bulbs. Energy saved if everyone did it would be like taking one million cars off roads.

8. Plant a Tree - either on your property or via an environmental cause. Help increase the plant content of the earth to counter rainforest destruction.

9. Recycle! Use your community recycling services to the fullest extent possible. If they are inadequate, do your part to convince your local officials to increase recycling services.

10. Participate! Join environmental groups such as:

Greenpeace
Global Green
Sierra Club

Filmbudget.com and Greentrees Films support a cleaner, greener environment through activism and community participation. Together we can make a difference.

Film Finance Requires Film Budgets From a Line Producer

Film financiers and movie investors demand film budgets from a known line producer with which to evaluate a project for production. Film production companies also insist upon a high quality film budget from a known, veteran film producer, hand created specifically for your screenplay.

Meticulous attention to detail is required from a screenplay breakdown, creation of a detailed production shooting schedule based upon years of experience making motion picture productions in the field. Only such experience can yield the accurate results needed in spending other people's money.

Based upon the script breakdown and the shooting schedule, the film budgeting process commences utilizing the vast experience of a seasoned line producer or unit production manager. Taking short-cuts to this process is seriously frowned upon by the serious filmmaker community.

The American Pavilion

The Independent Film and Television Alliance (IFTA) has organized the American Pavilion.
Executive vice president Jonathan Wolf has explained that in talks with Asian market principals, the buyers and the sellers, it became evident there was a desire for a more cohesive presence of the American contingent due to the fact that Asian distributors make the rounds of the festivals and markets all year round.

These worldwide market events include Berlin (the European Film Market [EFM]), American Film Market (AFM), Cannes (Cannes Film Market).  Attending these markets are industry players with all ranges of movies with various film budgets and schedule parameters, including indie films and studio production values.

IFTA has received a grant from the U.S. Dept. of Commerce of $248,000 to help IFTA build national pavilions for United States of America product at overseas festivals, such as Filmart. This is a part of the export initiative of the current administration in the USA.

One result of the strength of the unity of its members is greater visibility on the sales floor rather than being scattered throughout the sprawling convention center. An additional film market will likewise be targeted for an IFTA pavilion which has yet to be announced.

It is hoped that the effort will help build growth for the independent American film sector in the manner that other nations utilize to promote their domestic industry.
