The Sundance Film Festival is the longest running American indie film festival and a highly sought after festival for independent cinema. Filmmakers accepted into Sundance receive an incredible amount of publicity and acclaim.
Distributors consider Sundance to be a critical market place for up and coming directors and compete with each other to catch the "next big thing" coming out of Park City. Movies with low film budgets stand neck and neck with those with a bigger production spend available but just as much prestige in most cases.
Founded by Robert Redford, the festival also entails the Sundance Institute which offers year round education, seminars, conferences, etc. including the Writers Lab, Producers Lab and Directors Lab which provides workshop opportunities for aspiring filmmakers with experienced industry professionals.
Set in the majestic Wasatch Mountain range the Hollywood film industry escapes to this small ski town, taking it over, with the oft repeated phrase "black suits with cell phones" to describe the many producers walking the snow covered streets amongst the locals.
Due to its proximity to Los Angeles, Sundance attracts an army of such industry players.
From its start as a humble indie gathering Redford's dream has grown to become a behemoth of marketing, dealmaking, success and failure for many a filmmaker with deals running from $0 for a film to $10 Million in a much sought bidding war for a new film
which shows promise for the box office.
