The Voting Body of Spirit Award nominees is comprised of IFP and Film Independent members.

Sarasota Film Festival

The Sarasota Film Festival has earned its position in the ranks of highly acclaimed film festivals in the country, by amongst the others, attracting top talent, big movie stars, directors and writers and by its national and international awareness. Independent cinema is fetted and star driven films with film budgets ranging from major to micro and talent from across the spectrum of filmmaking.

The SFF 2010 highlighted the holidays with Kevin Kline, a Sarasota Film legend of the screen and director John Landis, of 'Animal House' and 'Blues Brothers' fame.   Golden Globe winner Steve Buscemi performed and directed a stage reading of Oren Moverman's 'The Messanger', also starring Ben Foster, who co-stars with Buscemi in Moverman's upcoming film 'Rampart', about the 1990's LA Police Department's Rampart Division and the cases of Police misconduct.





The 2011 SFF will be offering more of such encounters with stars of the Silver Screen starting this April 7th, 2011 and running till the 17th.  Movies of all genres and film budgets will be proudly screened. Additional to the usual screenings and Q&A's from film professionals and stars, there will be Family Interactive workshop activities newly introduced this year where kids participate in a pinhole camera and lego animation, eat breakfast and screen short films.  Also, Cinema Tropicale is an event hosted at the Yacht club on the 13th where you can enjoy Caribbean beats, mingle with other film makers from the festival, have cocktails and cuisine.

Christopher Plummer will be accepting this year's Cinema Master Award at the Sarasota Opera House on the 16th, where you will be able to attend the celebration of art in film with other stars in the line-up of honorees and presenters.    The Closing Night film will be Mike Mills' Focus Feature, 'Beginners,' starring Ewan McGregor, Melanie Laurent, and Christopher Plummer.

Cinequest Film Festival 2011

The 21st Cinequest Film Festival will unveil one hundred-seventy three films, be comprised of some soul stirring events and amazing innovations in palatial venues.  Cinequest will fuse the community of film lovers with each films creators, holding forums with the 700 plus artists expected in attendance.  There will be much more than a film festival to experience.



The opening night will be this March 1st, 2011 and the festival will run through the 13th.  The opening night will feature John Turturro's directorial spectacular and beautiful love poem to the city of Naples; a city of music, of culture and especially, its extraordinary people.  The movie is called 'Passione' which is a beautiful celebration of not just the music of a city, but also about what connects us with every artist out there; passion.  It is a captivating journey that uses such music to explore ideas of life: loving, losing, sex, birth and dealing with death.  After the screening, Cinequest throws an Opening Night Party, providing cocktails, food, and music.

Cinequest is now honored and recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a festival qualified for the Short Films category for the Annual Academy Awards®.  Provided a film production complies with the Academy’s rules, Recipients of the BEST Short Narrative and BEST Short Animation will qualify for consideration for an Academy Award® without the standard theatrical run.

Cinequest Film Festival 21 will continue to celebrate the Maverick Spirit with the Best Short Narrative, Best Short Documentary, Best Short Animated Film, Best Student Film, Best Feature Documentary, Best Feature Narrative, and Maverick Spirit Award.  Movies with large film budgets and those with smaller film budgets are included.

The Day of the Writer is also a special event packed into this Festivals schedule. The event will take place 10AM to 5 PM, with breaks, on 3/11/11. It will be broken up into three parts; Part One - Crafting the Heart of Sci Fi: The Story, Part Two - Science Fiction Writing Comprehensive-A Forum Discussion, and Part Three - The Maverick Spirit Conversation. A PURCHASE OF $20 eill include all parts of this Intensive. The winners amongst the top ten screenplay finalists will be announced during Part Two of the Day of the Writer.

The 34th Göteborg International Film Festival is underway in Sweden with over 200,000 festival attendees expected.   The festival is one of the biggest film festivals in the world by audience members.

Additionally the Nordic Film Market commences this week and coincides with the film festival.   The 12th Nordic Film Market is the premiere market for Nordic films with 28 movies and productions to be presented to international distributors and buyers.

Film Agency Wales to Support Michael Sheen in "Port Talbot Passion"



Film Agency Wales announced their support of £425,000 for four films including Michael Sheen starring movie 'Port Talbot Passion'.   The Welsh funding body revealed their investment in the project in conjunction with National Theatre Wales.   Based upon a series of live theatrical productions which were staged in non-traditional, non-theater spaces, the project has been a collaborative effort of Sheen's and director Dave McKean, with Sheen travelling often back to his hometown of Port Talbot.  Project is inspired by but not based upon the biblical Passion Play.
